What it does
MCP for Blender (formerly blender-mcp) is an MCP server plus a Blender addon. An MCP server is a connector that gives Claude new tools. Here it lets Claude talk to a running copy of Blender: create and edit objects, apply materials, write Blender Python, and look at the scene from different angles to check the result.
It can also bring in assets from Poly Haven, Sketchfab and Poly Pizza, and generate 3D models with Tripo, Hyper3D Rodin or Hunyuan3D. This is a third-party project, not made by Blender.
Install it
- Run the one-line installer for your system (below). It installs uv if needed, finds Claude Code, Claude Desktop and other AI apps on your machine, and lets you pick which to set up.
- The installer also installs and enables the Blender addon. It keeps your existing config and saves a .bak copy of each file it changes.
- Fully quit and reopen your AI app. On Windows, quit it from the system tray.
- Open Blender. The addon starts its server when Blender opens.
macOS / Linux
curl -LsSf https://www.mcp-for-blender.com/install.sh | sh
Windows (PowerShell)
powershell -ExecutionPolicy ByPass -c "irm https://www.mcp-for-blender.com/install.ps1 | iex"
Use it
- In Blender, open the 3D View sidebar (press N), find the MCP for Blender tab, tick the features you want, and click Connect to Claude.
- Ask Claude something simple first, like: Create a sphere and place it above the cube.
- Then try bigger requests from the README, such as: Create a low poly scene in a dungeon, with a dragon guarding a pot of gold.
- If it does not connect, restart both Claude and the Blender server. The first command sometimes does not go through.
Good to know
Claude can run any Python code inside Blender. Always save your work before using it.
Sketchfab, Poly Pizza, Hyper3D and Hunyuan3D need their own API keys, which you can store under Edit, Preferences, Add-ons, MCP for Blender. A paid Premium option generates AI models without bringing your own keys. Telemetry is opt-in and off by default. Already have uv? You can run uvx mcp-for-blender setup instead of the installer.
