What it does

Exa MCP is a hosted MCP server. An MCP server is a connector that gives Claude new tools. This one adds web search and a page reader that returns any URL as clean markdown.

There is nothing to run on your computer: you point Claude at Exa's server URL. Optional tools add advanced search filters and Exa Agent for multi-step research and list-building.

Install it

  1. In Claude Code, install the Exa plugin with the command below. You can also install it from the Claude Plugin Marketplace page linked at the bottom.
  2. Restart Claude Code if the tools do not show up right away.
  3. Using another MCP client? Add the server URL https://mcp.exa.ai/mcp with the config shown below.

Copy this

Terminal
claude plugin install exa@claude-plugins-official

Config for other MCP clients

Config
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "exa": {
      "type": "streamable-http",
      "url": "https://mcp.exa.ai/mcp"
    }
  }
}

Use it

  1. Ask Claude to search the web for a topic. It uses the web_search_exa tool.
  2. Give Claude a URL and ask it to read the page. It uses web_fetch_exa.
  3. The plugin also loads two skills, search and exa-agent, for deeper research, lead generation and competitive analysis.

Good to know

The hosted server works without an account, with rate limits. For higher limits and Exa Agent, sign in with OAuth (most clients prompt you) or use an API key from the Exa dashboard.

To turn on optional tools, add them to the URL, for example https://mcp.exa.ai/mcp?tools=web_search_exa,web_fetch_exa,agent_run. This replaces the defaults, so list every tool you want.
