What it does

Firecrawl MCP is an MCP server. An MCP server is a connector that gives Claude new tools. This one lets Claude scrape a page into clean markdown or JSON, map all the URLs on a site, crawl many pages, search the web, and interact with pages that need a click before you can read them.

There is a hosted version you just connect to, and a local version you run with npx.

Install it

  1. Create a Firecrawl account and get an API key at firecrawl.dev/app/api-keys. Without a key, the hosted free tier still lets you scrape, search and parse, with rate limits.
  2. Easiest: in your MCP client, add the hosted server URL https://mcp.firecrawl.dev/v2/mcp-oauth and connect your account when asked.
  3. For Claude Desktop with an API key: open claude_desktop_config.json and paste the config below, replacing YOUR_API_KEY_HERE with your key.
  4. Save the file and restart Claude Desktop.

Claude Desktop config

Config
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "mcp-server-firecrawl": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": ["-y", "firecrawl-mcp"],
      "env": {
        "FIRECRAWL_API_KEY": "YOUR_API_KEY_HERE"
      }
    }
  }
}

Use it

  1. Give Claude a URL and ask for its content. It uses firecrawl_scrape.
  2. Ask Claude to list every page on a site. It uses firecrawl_map.
  3. Start from a question instead of a URL, and Claude uses firecrawl_search for ranked web results.
  4. Ask it to check how many Firecrawl credits you have left. It uses firecrawl_credit_usage.

Good to know

Crawl, map and agent tools need an API key or OAuth; the keyless tier only covers scrape, search and parse.

The README says never paste your API key into a chat with an agent and never put it in the server URL. Put it in the client's config or secret settings.

On Windows with Cursor, the README suggests: cmd /c "set FIRECRAWL_API_KEY=your-api-key && npx -y firecrawl-mcp".
