Claude-Mem

Claude Code remembers what you worked on last time. Claude-Mem records each session and feeds the useful context into the next one.

What it does

Normally each Claude Code session starts from scratch. Claude-Mem watches what Claude does during a session, writes short summaries, and puts the relevant ones back into your next session automatically.

It also adds a search skill so you can ask about your project history in plain English, and a web viewer that shows the memory as it is recorded.

Install it

  1. Make sure you have Node.js 20 or newer.
  2. Open your terminal and run the install command below.
  3. When the installer asks, sign in to claude-mem in your browser with the email link. You can skip this (see Good to know).
  4. Restart Claude Code.

Copy this

Terminal
npx claude-mem install

Or install from inside Claude Code

Claude Code
/plugin marketplace add thedotmack/claude-mem
/plugin install claude-mem

Use it

  1. Start a new Claude Code session. Context from earlier sessions appears on its own.
  2. Ask Claude about past work, for example: what did we change in the login code last week? The mem-search skill looks it up.
  3. Wrap anything you do not want stored in <private> tags.
  4. If something breaks, describe the problem to Claude and the built-in troubleshoot skill will diagnose it.

Good to know

Signing in gives you a 30-day free trial of the hosted claude-mem observer, with no card required. When the trial ends, memory falls back to your Anthropic plan unless you subscribe. You can also use your own OpenRouter or Gemini key. To skip sign-in entirely, pass a --provider flag or set CLAUDE_MEM_ONLINE_OPTIN=false.

Do not use npm install -g claude-mem. That installs only the library, not the plugin. Settings live in ~/.claude-mem/settings.json.
