What it does

An LLM API lets your code or tools send a prompt to an AI model and get an answer back. This repo lists providers that offer free access, and it is refreshed daily from its companion site, freellm.net.

For each provider it shows how many free models there are, whether you need a credit card or phone verification, the maximum context size, and a direct link to get an API key. The providers all expose an OpenAI-compatible endpoint, so any tool that accepts a base URL and an API key can use them.

How to use it

  1. Pick a provider from the Provider Directory. The README suggests starting with Groq: no credit card, 30 requests per minute free.
  2. Click the Get Key link for that provider, sign up (most need just an email) and copy your key.
  3. Copy the provider's base URL and a model ID from the Quick Reference and Best Models tables.
  4. Paste them into your tool. The freellm.net config generator has step-by-step setups for Claude Code, Cursor, Codex, Aider, Cline and Open WebUI.

Claude Code setup from the README

Terminal
# Claude Code needs an Anthropic-compatible API — use OpenRouter
export ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL="https://openrouter.ai/api"
export ANTHROPIC_AUTH_TOKEN="sk-or-v1-your-key" # openrouter.ai/keys
export ANTHROPIC_API_KEY="" # must be empty

Use it

  1. Not using Claude Code? Paste the base URL and key into any app or script that accepts an OpenAI-compatible API.
  2. Use the freellm.net playground to try models before you commit to one.
  3. Check the Local / Self-Hosted section if you want models that run on your own computer.

Good to know

Claude Code needs an Anthropic-compatible API, so the README routes it through OpenRouter. It notes that OpenRouter's Anthropic models need a one-time $10 top-up.

Free tiers have rate limits and can change. Keep your API keys private.
