What it does
OmniRoute is a gateway: a small server on your computer that your coding tool talks to instead of one AI company. It connects to hundreds of providers, many with free tiers, and if one hits a limit it falls back to another so you keep working.
It has a web dashboard for adding providers and a model called auto that picks a route for you. It works with Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, Cline and any OpenAI-compatible tool.
Install it
- Open your terminal and run the install command below. The second line starts the server.
- Open the dashboard at http://localhost:20128.
- Go to Providers and connect a free provider, such as Kiro AI or OpenCode Free (no sign-in needed).
- Go to Endpoints and copy your API key.
Install and start OmniRoute
npm install -g omniroute omniroute
Point Claude Code at it
omniroute configure claude
Use it
- Run omniroute configure claude and pick a provider and model when it asks. It writes Claude Code's own config for you.
- For any other tool, set the base URL to http://localhost:20128/v1, paste your API key from the dashboard, and use the model auto.
- Check it works by running: curl http://localhost:20128/v1/models -H "Authorization: Bearer YOUR_KEY". You should see your connected models.
Good to know
If you use npm 11 or later, npm may block the install scripts OmniRoute needs. The README has the exact --allow-scripts command to use instead. Warnings like npm warn ERESOLVE during install are harmless.
Free-tier limits are set by each provider and change over time.
