What it does
OpenDesign describes itself as an open-source alternative to Claude Design. You start with a brief, and your coding agent (or OpenDesign Cloud) builds a prototype, deck, dashboard, image or video that follows your design system. You can share it for feedback and keep refining it in the same project.
The output is real HTML and CSS, and you can export to PPTX, PDF or MP4. It ships with 100+ skills, design templates and 151 design systems.
Install it
- Download the desktop app for macOS (Apple Silicon or Intel) or Windows from open-design.ai or the GitHub Releases page. No Node or other setup is needed.
- Open the app. It finds the coding-agent CLIs on your computer, such as Claude Code, automatically.
- Type a brief in the entry view to start your first project.
Or connect it to Claude Code (no UI)
- On macOS with the desktop app, open Settings, MCP server in the app and copy the Claude Code snippet. The README recommends this because macOS has a built-in od command that can get in the way.
- Otherwise, run the install command below to add OpenDesign's MCP server to Claude Code.
- Then ask Claude to use it, with the prompt below.
Copy this
od mcp install claude
First prompt
Use open-design to generate a landing page with the Linear design system
Good to know
There is no prebuilt Linux app yet; Linux users run it from source (Node ~24, pnpm 10.33.x). Automatic setup for Claude Desktop (od mcp install claude-desktop) works on macOS and Windows only.
The app is free and open source. A paid OpenDesign Go plan, which the README says starts at $8 for the first month, adds monthly model credits. The MCP connection is read-only by default and only listens on your own machine.
