What it does
OpenMontage is an open-source video production system driven by an AI coding assistant. You describe the video you want in plain language and the agent handles research, scripting, asset generation, editing and final composition.
It can build image-based videos or stitch real stock footage into a timeline. You can also start from a reference video (a YouTube, Short, Reel, TikTok or local clip) and have the agent turn it into a grounded plan with concepts and cost estimates. A local board called Backlot shows the production happening and acts as an approval gate before rendering.
Install it
- Install the prerequisites: Python 3.10+, Node.js 18+ and FFmpeg (macOS: `brew install ffmpeg`; Debian/Ubuntu: `sudo apt install ffmpeg`).
- Clone the repo and run the setup, using the commands below.
- Open the project folder in your AI coding assistant (Claude Code, Cursor, Copilot, Windsurf or Codex).
- Optional: copy `.env.example` to `.env` and add API keys for the providers you have. Every key is optional; more keys unlock more tools.
Copy this
git clone https://github.com/calesthio/OpenMontage.git cd OpenMontage make setup
Use it
- In your coding assistant, tell it what you want, for example: "Make a 60-second animated explainer about how neural networks learn."
- For real footage, say so: "Use real footage only, no narration, with music."
- Approve the scenes on the Backlot board before the final render. The agent opens it automatically when a production starts.
Good to know
Many asset providers (image, video, voice, music) need their own API keys, and those services can cost money per generation. Free stock media providers (Pexels, Pixabay, Unsplash) are supported. The project is licensed AGPL-3.0.
If you do not have `make`, the README gives the manual setup commands for macOS/Linux and Windows PowerShell.
